Meet Nigerian candidates in today’s U.S. general elections

                     Charles Onyejiaka

Americans in Franklin, New Jersey,
will vote for Charles Ejike
Onyejiaka, a fellow citizen and a
transplant from Imo State, Nigeria,
as the U.S. general election
unfolds today.
Mr. Onyejiaka, a democrat, is the
incumbent in a two-way race for
Ward 3 Councilman seat in
Franklin. He was one of three men
presented to Franklin Town
Council as fill-in candidates for the
unexpired term of Phil Kramer,
former Ward 3 Councilman, who
became Mayor of Franklin last
January.
Mr. Onyejiaka beat Alex Kharazi
and Azim Uddin, also democrats
and immigrants, to succeed
Kramer. Today, he is contesting
against Beverly Briggs-Lawson, a
Republican, in the general election.
Mr. Onyejiaka is one of four
Americans of Nigerian descent
whose names are on ballots in
grassroots elections at township
and county levels this year. The
others are George Chidi, Rasheed
‘BJ’ Dawodu and April Ademiluyi.
All four are product of currents of
civic engagement by hundreds of
immigrants and first generation
Americans who maintain their ties
to Nigeria even as they live
relatively comfortable lives in the
United States.
The rising crescendo of political
engagement by Nigerian-
Americans is, in some ways,
personified by the emergence of
Nigerian-American Public Affairs
Committee or NAPAC-USA, a self-
described “political and social
welfare think tank where the
intellectual and numerical assets of
Nigerians and Nigerian-Americans
could be harnessed to invigorate
our active participation in
American political and civic life”.
The organization originated from
the exertion of an intense,
voluntary, electioneering campaign
by some Nigerian-Americans on
behalf of a Democratic candidate
in
California’s 36th District during the 2011 special
election.
Spurred by the impact of their collective
energy, the volunteers decided to create a
permanent front which, with an eye on the 2012
general election, was organized as a political
action committee named Nigerian-American
Political Action Committee or NAPAC.
NAPAC and NAPAC-USA are legally registered
entities now, the former as a 501 (c) 3 public
welfare foundation and the latter as a 501 (c) 4
non-partisan membership advocacy group.
NAPAC Foundation exists for the sole purpose
of fostering and carrying “out the vision and
objectives of NAPAC-USA and its state PACs”.
Under American law, a PAC or political action
committee can raise and spend unlimited
amount of money on behalf of a political
candidate or to support an issue.
NAPAC Foundation is yet to accumulate the
billion dollar war chest some super PACs are
famous for, but it did raise $50,000 for the
Obama re-election Campaign because of what
the group describe as “our excitement that
someone with African roots had the historic
opportunity to seek and was actually elected to
the highest office of the land”.
Its campaign contribution in this election circle
has not been disclosed but there is cause to
believe that NAPAC has become the veritable
gathering place for Nigerian-American activists
across the United States, be they aspirants for
political office or community advocates.
Of the four Americans of Nigerian descent
running for office this year, only Onyejiaka
seems to have no contact with the organization.

Chidi and Dawodu attended NAPAC Convention
in Atlanta, Georgia, this past September where
they mingled with professionals, entrepreneurs
and activists from as many as ten states and
from cities as far as Los Angeles, New York,
Detroit and Baltimore. They had the honor of
being the only nominees for electoral positions
this year but not the distinction of being the
only break-out politicians at the convention.
Also
present
was
Tinuade
Pena, a
first
generation American who spent part of her
formative years in Lagos. An engineer and
business owner, Ms. Pena is also a U.S. Army
sergeant and long-time resident of Florida’s
Royal Palm Beach. She was a Democratic
candidate for District 86 of the Florida House of
Representatives this year but lost to a fellow
veteran during the primary election in August.

George Chidi is also a veteran and, the son of
George Njoku Chidi, a native of Umuoye in Imo
State. The younger George is running for a seat
on the Board of Commissioners in DeKalb
County, Georgia. His story reads almost like
that of Barack Obama. His dad arrived
Massachusetts in 1970 on a student visa, met his
mum who is a Caucasian of Polish descent.
They got married and, unlike Obama’s dad, the
older George stayed in the United States. George
junior was an active duty soldier in the 25th
Infantry Division of the U.S. Army for five years
and, he has been a journalist and civic leader
for twenty years.
Of the four Nigerian-Americans running for
office, he seems to have the deepest connection
to his constituents and the widest name
recognition among Americans and Nigerian-
Americans alike. He defeated eight other
aspirants to become the Democratic nominee
for this general election which he is strongly
favored to win. He is very supportive of the
Nigerian immigrant community, he is a known
face at their social events and an active
promoter of worthy causes, including the
candidacy of Rasheed Bolaji (or ‘BJ’) Dawodu.
Mr. Dawodu, a Democrat, is running against
Republican Kristie King for the position of Tax
Commissioner in Fayette County, Georgia. A
small business owner and seasoned financial
management professional, Dawodu relocated to
the United States from his native Lagos (Isale
Eko) more than 20 years ago. He worked
extensively in the public sector before going
into private practice, his bid for office of the
Tax Commissioner is actively supported by
Fayette Chamber of Commerce and his
immigrant constituency.

April
Ademiluyi is
the only
female
American of
Nigerian
descent
contesting in
the general
election and
she is
contesting
for a judicial
not
administrative position. She is a candidate for
the Seventh Circuit Court in Prince George’s
County, Maryland. April is a first generation
American with roots in the Ademiluyi royal
family in Ife.
Election into Circuit Courts is non-partisan,
candidates participate in as many party
primaries as they choose but they have to win
at least one primary to get on the ballot. Ms.
Ademiluyi won the Libertarian Party primary.
Prince George’s county is reputed to be home to
some of the richest Nigerians in the United
States, there have been some local fund raising
gatherings to support April’s candidacy. She
also got a boost from NAPAC president, Mr.
Segun Adeyina who came from Georgia to
campaign for her.
Township and county level elections usually do
not attract polling agencies so it is not easy to
track the progress of these candidates. One
thing that can be said for all of them is, if
elected, their constituencies will get top-tier
professionals and more in each of them.
Charles Onyejiaka has a degree in Electronics
Engineering from Thomas Edison State
University, he is also something of a veteran
public servant with experience dating back to
Nigeria’s Second Republic.
Born in Nkwerre, Mr. Onyejiaka grew up in a
family of public servants whose record of civic
engagement reached its zenith during Nigeria’s
Second Republic when Sam Mbakwe was
governor of Imo State. His uncle served as a
commissioner while an aunt worked as special
assistant in the governor’s office. Charles has
followed the footsteps of his Nigerian family in
his new country.
In 2015, he mobilized voter turn-out in numbers
that proved good enough to give Democrats
their first mayoral victory in Franklin
Township. He is prominent member of the local
Catholic community and has served on the
Township Planning Board.
George Chidi has a bachelor degree in
Journalism, MBA from Georgia Tech and was
chief executive officer of a firm that markets
competitive intelligence for corporate clients.
Rasheed Dawodu has degrees in accounting,i
law, public finance and is a certified fraud
examiner. He has worked for Fortune 500 firms
including General Electric and Georgia Pacific.
April Ademiluyi has a first degree was in
Chemical Engineering, law degree from an Ivy
League university and has been recognized by
Congressional leaders for working with families
facing foreclosure.

Mark Elliot Zuckerberg Came to Nigeria

Know What The Facebook Founder - Mark Elliot Zuckerberg Came to Nigeria For

The Chairman, Chief Executive Officer, and co-founder of social networking website Facebook - Mark Elliot Zuckerberg visited Nigeria for the first time, arrived on Tuesday afternoon (30th August 2016), touching down in Lagos, Nigeria. He met with local businesses and developers in an effort to understand how Facebook (FB, Tech30) could “better support tech development and entrepreneurship across Africa,” the company said in a statement.

His visit included a trip to a Yaba, known as the Silicon Valley of Nigeria, where he toured a coding camp for kids and met with about 50 local startup founders and developers at CcHub, a local innovation center.

Zuckerberg had traveled to Kenya after visiting Lagos. One day after he left Lagos for Nairobi to “learn about mobile money“, Zuckerberg is back in Nigeria on on Friday 2nd September, 2016 to meet the country’s president Muhammadu Buhari and vice president, Yemi Osinbajo. Zuckerberg has also been attending a start-up demo day hosted by the country’s presidency.

Zuckerberg was in Abuja for the Aso Villa Demo Day which is a program that aims to promote entrepreneurship, innovation and economic growth through new and emerging technology.

Unfortunately, it appears like his plans have suffered an unrecoverable setback on Thursday morning when a SpaceX rocket – owned by Elon Musk exploded during a routine pre-launch check.

Exploded equipment is the Facebook/Spacecom’s AMOS-6 communications satellite, which costs $95 million according to experts estimation.

The Facebook Amos 6 Satellite was scheduled to launch into the orbit on Saturday but now that it's destroyed in the massive blast, it won't be realizable again at least for now.

The Satellite was to provide at about 14 African countries and the Middle East with free/affordable broadband. See what Mark said about the incident;

There are lots of lessons to learn from this an American programmer, Internet entrepreneur, executive, and philanthropist - Mark Elliot Zuckerberg.
His net worth is estimated to be US$53.7 billion as of August 2016, ranking him as the 5th richest person in the world. Source: Wikipedia

Upon all his wealth and personality,
  1. He keeps himself too low
  2. Still works very hard every minute of the day
  3. He appears casual most of the time.
  4. Quietly came to Nigeria (unnoticed)
  5. He trekked in the streets of Lagos without bodyguards and military men
  6. He walked around without sirens

WARNING – If You Are Studying Any Of These Courses In Nigerian Universities, You Are Not in School (SEE LIST)

BREAKING!!! NUC DROPS
WARNING – If You Are Studying
Any Of These Courses In Nigerian
Universities, You Are Not in
School (SEE LIST)
List of courses that have not been accredited in
Nigerian universities have been released – A
certificate issued for those courses will be
considered void

– The university of Abuja has the highest
number of unaccredited courses The National
Universities Commission (NUC) has released a
list of some courses that have not been
accredited.
The unaccredited courses pose serious danger
to students who study them as the certificates
issued by these universities for the courses will
not be officially recognised.
Premium Times reports that 2016 accreditation
status report indicated that these unaccredited
courses were taught in 37 out of 143
universities in the country. The Quality
Assurance Department of the NUC is in charge
of accrediting courses in the universities.
The NUC insists that for a course to be
accredited, it must meet the Benchmark
Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS) that has
been stipulated by the commission. Some of the
requirements include: “qualified faculty
members, good learning environment and
adequate teaching materials – equipment,
books and journals”.
According to the NUC, accreditation is
necessary to ensure “employers and other
members of the community that Nigerian
graduates of all academic programmes have
attained an acceptable level of competency in
their areas of specialization.” It also says it is
also important to certify courses to assure “the
international community that the programmes
offered in Nigerian Universities are of high
standards and that graduates of the institutions
are adequate for employment and further
studies.”
According to the commission, the pre-
accreditation process include “drawing up a list
of academic programmes to be certified,
compilation of list of panel chairmen/members,
time-tabling, budgeting and organizing the
accreditation coordination meeting for panel
chairmen and members in a simulation
workshop.”
The post-accreditation activities include
“analyzing accreditation reports (technical and
administrative), ranking of programmes and
universities based on their accreditation status,
publishing of accreditation status of
programmes, issuance of certificates to
programmes that earned Full and Interim
accreditation results.”
According to Premium Times, 13 federal
universities, 16 state universities and eight
private universities were running courses that
had not been accredited. Some of the high
profile institutions include University of Nigeria,
Nsukka; University of Benin, University of Jos,
University of Calabar. The biggest casualty
seems to be the University of Abuja which has
15 of its courses, including Law, unaccredited.

Eden Hazard can be Great as Messi and C.Ronaldo...

Eden Hazard and Chelsea stars can be as great as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi says Antonio Conte
Updated 17 Jul 2016, 13:05 IST
Antonio Conte is looking to get the best out of this current Chelsea squad

Babatunde Zacchaeus
Jul 17 2016

Eden Hazard was not at his best for Chelsea last season

Chelsea and Eden Hazard had forgettable campaigns last season, but new Chelsea manager Antonio Conte believes that he can help Hazard and other Chelsea stars reach the levels of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

"These players, with work, can still improve a lot," said Conte. "Because now we have players, fantastic players, who have great talent but in this moment the world doesn't think they are the same level as Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Neymar, Cristiano Ronaldo or Paul Pogba.

"But in our squad there are players who, with work, can improve a lot and reach this level. I'm sure about this."

Chelsea who were Premier League champions in 2014-15 season could only finish in a disappointing 10th position. However, Antonio Conte is no stranger to these type of challenges having revived Juventus’ fortunes in the Serie A.

The first pre-season match for Chelsea did not go according to plan as the blues slumped to a 2-0 defeat against Rapid Vienna. Spaeaking after the match, Conte emphasised on training and working hard:

"It's important that the players understand they must work to show that 'Now I am a top player, but I want to become top, top, top, top and want to stay there,'" he said. "The mentality is important. The heart is important. Patience and the will to improve is very important. And in this case it's important for the manager to take the best players and try to improve them."

Conte added: "Last season was bad for all the players, it's incredible that Chelsea finished 10th in the table.

"The habit of Chelsea is to win the title or to stay until the end of the season fighting to win the title, to play in the Champions League."

The Chelsea manager also spoke about Eden Hazard in particular:

"And last season it was incredible, not only for Hazard but for other players also. It's important for us to recover Hazard in the best condition: technique, tactical, physical, overall and with the good mentality," Conte said. "But I spoke with him and I'm very happy. I'm pleased to train a fantastic player like him and also the other players.

"It's important for me, I repeat, next season to create the right spirit in the team and with great organisation, a great physical condition we can have a good season."

It will be extremely interesting to see how Eden Hazard and the Chelsea squad respond to Conte’s unique style of management.

He has won two FA Youth Cups with the team and was part of the squads that won the first two UEFA Youth League tournaments, as well as representing the Blues in the 2013-14 U21 Premier League season.
Ola Aina has been a key figure for Chelsea's youth teams, helping them win back-to-back FA Youth Cups.

Ola Aina has been a key figure for Chelsea’s youth teams, helping them win back-to-back FA Youth Cups.

Last season he regularly trained with the Chelsea first team but he didn’t play as interim manager Guus Hiddink looked to youngsters Jake Clarke-Salter and Tammy Abraham during his time in charge.

There was concern amongst fans that Aina hadn’t been offered a new deal and he was linked to clubs like Arsenal and Celtic, that concern rose when another player out of contract, Alex Kiwomya, signed a new deal.
